A Letter from our VP

Greetings Women’s Basketball Fans!

At the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, it is our mission to "honor the past, celebrate the present and promote the future" of women's basketball. When it comes to promoting the future, we take great pride in our youth programming to not only promote the game, but also to give back to the community and do our part to inspire the lives of today's youth.

Through educational programming, time-out camps, birthday parties, Girl Scout events and the Eastman Skills programs, we welcome youngsters into the WBHOF, get them moving and teach them about what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle. Regardless of which program brings them to the hall, we are happy to have them visit and hope to positively impact their lives by the time they leave.

Jackie Wise, Program and Events Manager at the WBHOF, has worked hard to develop the WBHOF's education programs so that we can offer key components from the State of Tennessee school curriculum in a fun and interactive environment. In addition to the programs that focus on science, math, language arts, social studies and art, we also have programs that focus on physical fitness and nutrition.

According to the Office of the Surgeon General, more than 12.5 million children and adolescents (17.1 percent of people ages 2-19) are overweight. Overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight or obese adults. It is for that reason, that we put such an emphasis on eating right and being physically active. Our physical fitness and nutrition programs are offered to kindergarten through 8th grade students and focus on cardiovascular fitness, the food groups and sportsmanship. Being a sports museum gives us the opportunity to promote healthy lifestyles to youth in an exciting way!

I'm excited to announce that this summer, we will also incorporate our nutrition, physical fitness and sportsmanship programs into our time-out camps. Again, this is a great opportunity for us to make a positive impact on any child that walks through the door.

The Eastman Skills programs, that we offer as part of Eastman's annual Induction sponsorship, has been a great addition to our youth programming. Through the program, Eastman reaches out to schools in the Kingsport area to offer them a field trip to the WBHOF and our feedback from Eastman is that "many of the kids are from rural areas where this is truly a trip of a lifetime for them."

In addition to our WBHOF programs, we also take time out of our busy schedules to get out in the community through a local "Read with Me" program and Junior Achievement.

It brings a smile to my face every time I see a group of youngsters walk in the Hall in awe of the giant statue that greets them, gasp in shock when Senda Berenson starts telling her story and anxiously make their way onto the basketball courts. There's no doubt about it, the Hall is full of energy whenever a group of children are here. As we approach the 2010 Summer, we'll continue to welcome groups to the WBHOF as we promote the future of the game and reinforce healthy lifestyles.

Lastly, I want to remind everyone that plans for our 2010 Induction are underway and we're excited to put together a fantastic weekend of events! Stay tuned for more information and visit www.wbhof.com for more details. We look forward to seeing you on June 12 in Knoxville!

Best wishes,

Dana Hart
VP/GM of the WBHOF
