Margaret Sexton Gleaves
(1920-2007)

GLEAVES, Margaret Sexton Age 87 of Nashville . December 31, 2007 . Preceded in death by husband, James E. Gleaves, a dairy farmer. She was the daughter of the late Powell Bowling and Sadie Dozier Sexton. Survived by son, Dr. James (Millie) Gleaves; daughter, Ann (Rory) Ferrell; brother, Warren Sexton; sister, Jean Sexton. Sister to the late Sarah Callis, Powell Sexton, Jerome Sexton and Freddie Eddings; grandchildren, Elizabeth Gleaves Nassif, Katherine Gleaves, Rebecca Gleaves, Rachel Gleaves and James Tyler Ferrell; great-grandchild, Aliya Gleaves Nassif. She attended Richland Elementary School , graduated 1938 from Bellevue High School and Nashville Business College in 1940. She was a legendary player in the 1940's. An eight time AAU All-American guard who played on five national championship teams. One of the original inductees to Helms Hall of Fame; a 2002 Women's Basketball Hall of Fame inductee; and 2008 Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame inductee. She was an AAU All-American for Bellevue High School in 1938, AAU All-American at Nashville Business College 1939 and 1940, AAU All-American for Vultee Aircraft in 1944 and 1945, AAU All-American for Cooks Gold Blumes from 1946-1949 and named the 1948 MVP for the National AAU Tournament. Started and coached Holy Rosary Academy's Basketball 1965-1969; Member of the Pennington Bend Home demonstration Club, University of Tennessee President's Club, Nashville Chamber of Commerce, Donelson-Hermitage YMCA Board of Directors, Davidson County Farm Bureau Board and Jellystone Campground Board of Directors.
