Tennessee wins 2011 State Farm Tip-Off Classic

No.3 Tennessee defeated No. 7 Miami 92-76 on Tuesday November 15 in the 19th State Farm Tip-Off Classic at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, TN.

The pair of top ten teams were tied 42-42 at halftime before Tennessee scored the first nine points of the second half to take control of the game. Five Lady Vols reached double figures with Taber Spani leading the way with 20 points. As a team Tennessee made 11 three point field goals the most ever in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic.

Miami's Riguna Williams paced the hurricanes with 24 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds, while Shenise Johnson added 17 points and 9 rebounds. Miami missed all nine of its three-point attempts in the second half to fall short in their first appearance in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic.

Tennessee's Taber Spani and Miami's Riguna Williams became the 40th and 41st players to score 20 or more points in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic. Seimone Augustus still holds the record for most points in the Tip-Off Classic with 33.

• The State Farm Tip-Off Classic, in its 19th year, is the longest-running early-season event on ESPN
• The SFTOC is the primary fundraiser for the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and serves as the platform to announce the newest class of inductees each year
• This event has become synonymous with the start of the women’s collegiate basketball season
• In 2009, the SFTOC was changed from a doubleheader to a single game and a brand new logo was unveiled (see above)
• This year Tennessee is making their eighth appearance in the SFTOC. It will be first appearance for Miami in the SFTOC.
• This year marks the fifth time that the SFTOC has been held in Knoxville, Tennessee
• Tennessee defeated Ohio State and Texas Tech defeated Vanderbilt in the inaugural State Farm Tip-Off Classic in Jackson, TN, in 1993
• Oklahoma and DePaul set a SFTOC record in 2006 when Oklahoma scored a record-high 105 points and the two teams combined for a record-setting 176 points at Oklahoma.
• Former LSU standout Seimone Augustus holds the record for most points scored with 33 in 2004
• Forty-three players have recorded a double-double while participating in the event
